Hello,

I recently went for a two day SCRUM training and the trainer told us that the Scrum Master should not be from the same team and should be strictly an outsider (not from the same team) .

Is this correct, is this specified some where in the SCRUM guide line?

Thanks in advance,
Mathew George

The Scrum Team is made of one Scrum Master + one Product Owner + one Development Team.
The Scrum Master is clearly a part of the team.

I probably miss something in your question.
What do you mean by "outsider" ?
In wich context did the trainer say that ?

He told us that the SCRUM Master should from another SCRUM team, not from the same SCRUM team.

Please tell me that this is not a Scrum.org training.

This is incorrect by definition, since a Scrum Master is a role *on* the Scrum Team.

There can be some benefit in rotating team members, but that's just a general consideration.

Perhaps he meant "The Scrum Master should not be from the Development Team"? For this would be a reasonable argument, although the Scrum Guide explicitly allows (but not recommends) this constellation, too.
