The number of Scrum Events: 4 or 5?
I sure hope that the PSPO I exam doesn't ask how many scrum events exist, because the Scrum Guide gives two answers:
- Under Adaptation, it says, "Scrum prescribes four formal events..." It then lists the 4 as: Sprint Planning: Daily Scrum; Sprint Review; and Sprint Retrospective
- Under Scrum Events, it says "Other than the Sprint itself, which is a container for all other events, each event in Scrum is..."
- Also under the Scum Events section, it lists five sub-sections, including one for Scrum.
So in one section it says there are 4 events, but in another, it says, or at least suggests, that there are 5 events.
There are 5 events, 4 of which present an opportunity to inspect and adapt something.
Do you think the Sprint, which is a container for the other events, also presents an inspect-and-adapt opportunity? If so, what might it be?
You need to read the entire sentence under Adaption. You left of the end. Emphasis below is added by me.
Scrum prescribes four formal events for inspection and adaptation, as described in the Scrum Events section of this document:
As @Ian Mitchell points out 4 of the events are for the purpuse of inspect and adapt. The fifth is a container for all of those 4. There are 5 time boxed, specific purpose events described in the Scrum Guide. If the guide discusses a subset of those, it will also explain why only the subset is being discussed.
3-5-3, 3 roles, 5 events, 3 artifacts:)
4 events + the sprint as a containing event = 5 events in total.
These five events are:
- Sprint Planning
- Daily Scrum
- Sprint Review
- Sprint Retrospective
- The Sprint itself
