PO in individual scrum team Sprint Planning in a nexus?
Hi All,
Am I correct in guessing that the role of a PO changes in a nexus in relation to individual scrum team sprint planning sessions? I.e. their attendance is not mandatory as it is in non-scaled scrum. I haven't seen this highlighted anywhere in the guides as a difference.
Even with a good time boxing attending up to 9 sprint planning sessions in addition to the nexus sprint planning would seem infeasible, not to mention that the scrum teams may hold these simultaneously at the start of a sprint anyway.
Thanks,
Jennifer
I would think the Product Owner should be available in case any questions arise. However, as you've alredy deduced they cannot be everywhere at once. Some scaled Scrum Teams conduct a "Big Room" Sprint Planning where all the Scrum Teams are in the same room for their Plannings but as the number of teams grows, you need a huge roomw ith some very good acoustics or it devolves into an agonizing nightmare.
I think a good PO will make sure that they are available whilst teams are conducting their plannings (i.e. not out of office / in other meetings / etc.).

It is the Product Owner's availability and continued participation, rather than their attendance, which should be seen as mandatory. The PO will need to be available for both Nexus Sprint Planning and the individual Scrum Team Sprint Planning sessions. How that time is managed is up to the Nexus to arrange, as collaborative and self-organizing teams. They may choose to send representatives to the Product Owner in order to make best use of his or her availability and to facilitate participation.
