Retrospectives
what are people’s thoughts on the frequency of retrospectives? Once after each sprint or after a group of sprints?
The Scrum Guide says:
Each component within the framework serves a specific purpose and is essential to Scrum’s success and usage.
and:
Scrum’s roles, events, artifacts, and rules are immutable and although implementing only parts of Scrum is possible, the result is not Scrum.
Would you really have a Sprint at all if it did not include a Retrospective?
It is ok to have an additional retrospective around a particular theme, if it is helpful; but a Scrum Team should be looking to improve every sprint, and the Sprint Retrospective is intended to facilitate that.
We hold Sprint Retrospectives for EVERY Sprint, and a Release Retrospective once the full increment is ready to ship.

Isn’t there an increment which is ready to ship every Sprint? Or do you release multiple times per Sprint and hold a Retrospective on each occasion?
Yes, but we do not physically release to customers every Sprint due to the market I work in. As a result we have Sprint Goals and Release Goals over a longer timescale for which we have Retrospectives for also. We hold normal Sprint Retrospectives once per Sprint.
