I thinks  dont have a clear understanding what this phase means.

PO: Optimizing the value of the work the Development Team performs;

Could someone please explain it, with examples.

Thank you.

One example would be the ordering of the Product Backlog, so that it is refined in a timely manner for the best value delivery. During each Sprint Planning event, the Development Team can thereby be assured that the work being negotiated is indeed likely to be the most valuable.

Another example would be measuring the value provided by each increment as it is released, so that sensible decisions can be made regarding the future adaptation of the product.

A third example would be collaborating with the Development Team throughout each Sprint, so that the work is better understood, scope is clarified, and any immediate opportunities to improve value delivery can be exploited.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your explanation to Mikhail's question.  I am in the process of writing PSM1. Can the below para could have been phrased differently in the SCRUM GUIDE?

Currently it says:

Product Backlog management includes:

• Clearly expressing Product Backlog items;

• Ordering the items in the Product Backlog to best achieve goals and missions;

• Optimizing the value of the work the Development Team performs;

• Ensuring that the Product Backlog is visible, transparent, and clear to all, and shows what the Scrum Team will work on next; and,

• Ensuring the Development Team understands items in the Product Backlog to the level needed.

Could it have been said as below?

Product Backlog management includes:

• Optimizing the value of the work the Development Team performs by way of:

   •    Clearly expressing Product Backlog items;

   •    Ordering the items in the Product Backlog to best achieve goals and missions;

   •    Ensuring that the Product Backlog is visible, transparent, and clear to all, and shows what the Scrum Team will work on next; and,

   •    Ensuring the Development Team understands items in the Product Backlog to the level needed.

I am saying this because Optimizing the value of work includes all the above points.

Thanks in advance.

Might value optimization include activities which are not in that list?

I had the same question. This sentence is a bit confusing but Thanks to Ian for helping out here.

As Venu Madhav said, this para could have been written in different way and last sentence should have been - "Or by any other means".

Thanks for bring up this conversation. Same, I am also bit confused with sentence and feel aligned if it could have been said as below:

The Product Owner is the sole person responsible for managing the Product Backlog and optimizing the value of the work the Development Team performs by way of:

   •    Clearly expressing Product Backlog items;

   •    Ordering the items in the Product Backlog to best achieve goals and missions;

   •    Ensuring that the Product Backlog is visible, transparent, and clear to all, and shows what the Scrum Team will               work on next;

   •    Ensuring the Development Team understands items in the Product Backlog to the level needed.

  •     Might value optimize by adopting any other practices and activities
