Daily Scrum
Are you (as a Scrum Master) really don't participate in Daily Scrums?
Let's talk about the reasons.
Let's flip this question around. Since the Daily Scrum is an event to inspect progress toward the Sprint Goal and the Scrum Master's work does not progress the team toward the Sprint Goal, why should the Scrum Master participate in the Daily Scrum?
Keep in mind that participation and facilitation are different. One does not need to participate to facilitate an event. In the case where the Developers have asked the Scrum Master to facilitate, that doesn't mean the Scrum Master is participating.
Are you (as a Scrum Master) really don't participate in Daily Scrums?
Let's talk about the reasons.
Hopefully it's because you've done a good job, and the Developers are able to conduct their Daily Scrum for themselves. You've successfully managed their understanding of Scrum and their accountabilities.
The Scrum Guide makes it clear that "The Daily Scrum is a 15-minute event for the Developers".
Anyone can ATTEND Daily Scrum
Only Developers participate, but Scrum master can be invited to participate(unless scrum master is also a developer)
You as a scrum master not only can but SHOULD make sure that daily Scrum takes place, is timeboxed 15 min, and that conversation there serves achieving Scrum goal.
You can also suggest the time and place which might be most convenient-not dictate and suggest.
Most organizations conduct it in the morning, but you can experiment with different time of the day and settings
As a scrum aster its you job to teach, coach and mentor(which are different things, and happen at different stages) the developers to facilitate daily scrum in most productive way
This is your opportunity to influence the way they are conducting it
I meant that if Scrum master IS a developer he is participating in daily scrum, otherwise he is just making sure it is happening in a right way without actually participating in the discussion, unless invited to talk.
I don't participate in Daily Scrums because I am not a Developer that contributes to the work during the Sprint. Which means I have nothing of importance to contribute that will help the Developers plan their work until the next Daily Scrum.
In fact, I don't always attend the Daily Scrum. If I am confident that the Developers have learned the benefit and purpose of the event, I trust them to do it without me checking up on them.
