I work as a scrum master for multiple teams. Some members of the team think that Scrum Master should assign work where as I understand its completely against the principle of self managing teams and team empowerment. They have seen Scrum Master assigning work in other companies and projects hence they believe scrum master should assign work

What are some of the ways that could be used to convince the team of self assigning  (choosing) work from the backlog items. Sprint Goals and priorities are normally known

Sprint Goals and priorities are normally known

Who is deciding those goals, and any other commitments which are made?

When a team makes its own commitments, members are incentivised to self-manage their work so jointly agreed commitments will be met.

Developers self-organize their work. They turn Product Backlog items into Increments of value.

Why do you have to convince anyone that you shouldn't be assigning work? Don't assign people work. Unless your manager or supervisor is one of those people who believe that the Scum Master should be assigning work, you don't have to convince anyone. If the people won't self-select the work, then nothing will get done, and I'm sure someone would be asking questions at that point.
