Hi All,

I have gone through the below question in one of the external scrum mock test ( just for practice ):

Question

The structure of the Daily Scrum is well-defined and constant. Every team member should answer the three main questions:

  • What did I do yesterday?
  • What will I do today?
  • Do I see any impediment?

  •  True
  •  False

The actual answer here is False with below explanation:

There is no any prescribed structure. The structure of the Daily Scrum is set by the Development Team and can be conducted in different ways if it focuses on progress toward the Sprint Goal. Some Development Teams will use questions, some will be more discussion based. It is still perfectly fine to use the questions, but other ways of conducting the meeting are also possible.

Is it correct to use different approach for Daily Standup meeting ?

I am not completely satisfied with the explanation provided above.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi Prasun,

if you check the latest version of the Scrum Guide, you will find that the three questions are merely a suggestion. This is a relatively recent change which was introduced in November 2017. Before that, the Scrum Guide used to mandate that the three questions be used during the Daily Scrum. Many practicioners felt that this was micromanaging, because the Scrum Framework usually does not tell you HOW to conduct an event. There are a lot of valid other approaches to the Daily Scrum. Some teams use "Walk the Board", where they briefly discuss each item in progress. I've had a team which became incredibly successful by using the Daily Scrum to dicuss and commit to a common goal for the day. As with all other practices, each team is different and needs to work out what works best for them.

All of these other practices for the Daily Scrum emerged long before the Scrum Guide "demoted" the three questions to a recommendation. The authors had empirical evidence that a succesful Daily Scrum could be conducted using different approaches - and so they adapted the Scrum Guide to reflect it.

I hope that helps.

Would that “different approach” contradict the Scrum Guide? From your reading of the Guide, what actually are the Daily Scrum rules which should not be broken?

I actually suggest that those 3 questions are never used.  I have teams that like to use them, it helps them so I am not going to stop it.  But as pointed out above, it is very easy for teams to find better ways to conduct the Daily Scrum to achieve the purpose as it is stated in the Scrum Guide.  Study the guide, not to memorize the words, but to understand what is being said.  Then think of ways that you can see the described purpose being accomplished and you will have the answer to your own question.
