Scrum exists only in its entirety and functions well as a container for other techniques, methodologies, and practices.
Hi I'm having a bit of a difficulty understanding the exact meaning of this sentence and especially the second part of it starting .. "and functions well .. ".
What is meant by: "functions well as a container for other techniques.."? How should I interpret the word container? And is there an example to understand this sentence better?
Thanks,
John
Hello John,
For instance, you can use Scrum as a container for XP practices like TDD or CI or pair-programming, you can use Scrum as a container for Kanban practices... And because of the Scrum framework and its different inspect and adapt feedback loops, you can more easily inspect and adapt the effisciency of theses techniques.
Hi Olivier,
Thanks for your answer.
So what does the word "container" mean in this context?
Thanks,
John
It means for example:
Scrum mandates transparency, but it could take many forms... Some Scrum teams for example treat Scrum as a container for whole Kanban or just some it its practices, and as a result for example visualize Sprint Backlog as a physical Kanban board:
"the Kanban Board Visualization using the Kanban board is the way the Scrum Team makes its workflow transparent. The board's presentation should prompt the right conversations at the right time and proactively suggest opportunities for improvement"
Then, theses Scrum Teams treat this visual help to help during Daily Scrums.
Think of it as a synonym for framework in this context. Scrum provides essential structure around which an agile way-of-working can be implemented.
