How can I help my team find areas of improvement?

Sometimes teams struggle to identify areas of improvement and feel that they can't improve any further. Yet, there are always opportunities for improvement, even if you are working in a highly effective team.

Here are a few tips to surface areas of improvement:

  • Facilitate a data driven Sprint Retrospective. Looking at historical team data and past goals can trigger valuable discussions and bring potential areas of improvement to the surface. Historic team data can include flow metrics, Evidence Based management Key Value Areas and a revisit of data from previous Sprint Retrospectives and Sprint Reviews. 
  • Ask team members to participate in a team survey. Discussing the result will help you to identify where the team feels they need to improve most. 
  • Probe and ask open-ended questions to spark reflection and discussion
  • Allow and create space that encourages  the team to explore new concepts and learn things that enriches their ways of thinking. Team members may take time aside for knowledge sharing by for example participating in a community of practice and joining meetups, classes and conferences.
