Conducting the Daily Scrum

The Daily Scrum is timeboxed for 15 minutes.  It’s recommended that the Daily Scrum take place at the same time and place every day. By having this consistency, it becomes a habit that no one on the team has to think about.

It doesn’t matter what format the meeting takes, just as long as the meeting focuses on the progress toward the Sprint Goal and results in an actionable plan. Typically, each Developer has the opportunity to bring issues they are having to the surface and ask for help from their teammates. Depending on the nature of the issue, the Developers may not be able to resolve them during the 15 minutes allotted to the meeting. Instead, they should plan to collaborate outside the Daily Scrum.

During the Daily Scrum, the team often adjusts the Sprint Backlog by adding, removing, splitting and decomposing Product Backlog Items (PBIs) and the tasks required to accomplish them.

Since neither the Product Owner or Scrum Master are required at this event, the Developers assume the responsibility for conducting the meeting. Of course, if the PO and SM are actively working on the Sprint Backlog, they participate in the Daily Scrum in their role as Developers.

During the Daily Scrum, they identify any issues they need help in resolving, ask for help when they need it and adjust the Sprint Backlog, if necessary.
