Multicultural Scrum: The Impact of Culture on Living The Scrum Values

September 2, 2016

In July 2016, Jeff Sutherland & Ken Schwaber – the co-creators of Scrum unveiled the new version of the Scrum Guide – which now includes a section on Scrum Values: Courage, Focus, Commitment, Respect, and Openness.

When the values of commitment, courage, focus, openness and respect are embodied and lived by the Scrum Team, the Scrum pillars of transparency, inspection, and adaptation come to life and build trust for everyone. The Scrum Team members learn and explore those values as they work with the Scrum events, roles and artifacts.

Successful use of Scrum depends on people becoming more proficient in living these five values.

In today’s global economy, many Scrum teams will have members from different cultural backgrounds. Cultural differences add complexity to effective use of Scrum and without active management, this added complexity can impede the Scrum Team’s ability to iteratively and incrementally deliver valuable, “Done” products.

In this Scrum Pulse session, our PST panel will share their experiences, challenges and insights from guiding the effective adoption of Scrum in multi-cultural Scrum. Watch this recording to get a fresh perspective on how culture might impact interactions with your scrum team and how you might effectively harness the power of cultural diversity to build strong, self-organizing Scrum teams.
