reduce complexity

Hi Team,

 

In Scrum Guide for the Daily Scrum it says  "The Daily Scrum is held at the same time and place each day to reduce complexity".

I think I understand what complexity is it speaking about.

But, please provide your opinions about 'complexity'

I've been reading about a technique called cynefin which really explains this very well

There are four categories:

Chaotic: We don't know what to do, how to do it, or when to do it, or even what the problem is.

Complex: Unknown Unknowns - We know what the problem is but need to figure out how to do it, when to do it, and what to do.

Complicated: Known Unknowns - We know what the problem is and what to do, but not how or when

Simple: Known knowns - We know what the problem is, what to do, how to do it, and when. (And where in the case of standups)

 

The goal is always to reduce the number of questions before taking action.  If the team knows how to do a standup, but doesn't know when or where, that leads to complexity.  If the team knows when the stand up is and where it is, but not how, that leads to complexity.  You can extrapolate from there.

How many times have you and coworkers tried to answer this question.  "Where do we want to eat lunch today?".  That turns into a discussion that can go on and on. "This place is busy at this time."  "It's Thursday so that have a special".  Trying to agree on a time and place is complex.  

By having the Daily Scrum every day at the same time at the same place, the team can then leave the complex discussions on what they did and what they plan to do.  

Another way to look at it, a habit is not hard or complex.  Create a habit of going to the same place at the same time every day and it becomes easier.
