New to Scrum
Hi all,
I am new to the concept of Agile/Scrum but would definitely like to pusue some further training
Are there any online courses I could enrol on which would prepare me for a Scrum exam?
I come from a traditional developement background (25 plus years of developing business applications on the AS/400) and this methodology is rather alien to me as my previous roles have involved 'waterfall' development but I have recently undertaken some Agile courses with a previous employer
What would be the best certifcation to undertake when coming into Scrum for the first time?
Regards,
David Bryan
Hi David,
Welcome to the world of Scrum! I suggest the following resources to get you started:
1. Study the Scrum Guide (http://www.scrumguides.org) - read it carefully, it's got a lot of information packed into 16 pages
2. Go over the Scrum training videos here: http://scrumtrainingseries.com - it's a good overview.
3. Read some books, for example "Software in 30 Days," "The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time," "Scrum and XP from the Trenches." (Maybe someone else can suggest some other good books.)
4. There are a lot of helpful posts on this forum - look through them or ask questions if something's not clear.
As far as certifications, there are a number of sites offering certifications, but I suggest you get certified on scrum.org. Scrum.org certifications are probably the most widely-recognized and you don't need to attend expensive training courses, you can self-study. PSM I is good to start with.
Just a word of caution: there are a lot of resources out there about Scrum that are inaccurate or outdated, so when preparing for the assessment compare everything to the Scrum Guide - it's the final authority.
Good luck!
Chris
Thanks Chris,
I have started my learning with your suggested links
I will strongly suggest "Scrum Beyond the Trenches" after reading "Scrum & XP from the Trenches" (same author) ;-)
