What if We Start Turning Things Upside down? A Small Poem about Agility & Scrum

December 11, 2018

This is the truth.

If we turn things upside down
organizations can't truly embrace Agility.
I would be lying if I said that
we can improve our product delivery process even more.
that we can further minimize our maintenance costs and that
Teams can be self-organized, professional, motivated and deliver value,
I'm sure of this because of my experience in the field.
bureaucracy, fear of change and securing job safety is in our nature.
I refuse to believe that
Organizations can benefit from Scrum.
because of our habitual way of product delivery.
Most projects are stressing, painful and over budget,
There are even more surprises to come.
your organizations have only one destination.
Whether you like it or not

This is reality.

(now read from bottom to up)

Time to change

Once upon a time a bunch of Project Managers from different industries and walks in life gathered for a meeting near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Conversations were long and arduous:
- we have enough of this chaos!
- True! We need more processes and order! Self-Organisation is anarchy.
- People deny to respect us and even undermine our humble position!
- ... (so on, so forth)

Thus they've created:

Manifesto for Waterfall Software Development

"We have uncovered better ways of developing software by doing it and telling others how to do it.

Through this work we have come to value:
Processes and Tools over individuals and interactions
Comprehensive Documentation over working software
Contract Negotiation over customer collaboration
Following a Plan over responding to change

That is, while there is value in the items on the right, we value the items on the left more."
