What To Do In The First 90 Days With A Scrum Team

July 21, 2024

In a conversation with a new Scrum Master, I shared advice for the first 90 days on the job.

Reflecting on my own early experience, I emphasized the importance of observing implicit and explicit agreements within the team, helping the team define and understand their "Definition of Done," and fostering team cohesion. I advised against making rapid, sweeping changes and stressed the value of patience, humility, and understanding the existing team dynamics and culture before implementing new processes.

In brief: don't make the mistakes I made.

In this video, I offer advice for the first 90 days with a Scrum team.

00:14 My first 90 days
01:12 Don't do what I did
01:25 Humility and wisdom are needed
01:35 The system will always kick back
02:10 Observe the current working agreements
03:06 Don't force Scrum
03:55 Help the team define 'Done'
05:26 Arrange a meal for the team
