Hey awesome people. I hope you are having a great time with your friends and families in this holiday season. Last week, I shared about the Product Owner accountability. In today's vlog, I would like to talk about the Scrum Master's accountability which is not quite obvious for some people even after reading the Scrum Guide. Many people have been asking me, what is the Scrum Master accountability? What do they do all day? Just like how the Product Owner and the Development Team have accountability, so does the Scrum Master.
Respect is one of the Scrum values and knowing the Scrum Master's accountability is valuable so that there is mutual respect between everyone in the company and the Scrum Master. I have found over the past few years, when people in the company and the Scrum Master him/herself does not know the accountability of the Scrum Master:
- Management does not understand how the Scrum Master they hired is valuable to the company.
- The Scrum Master him/herself is producing the unexpected behaviour.
- In some cases I have heard people in the company, including the Development Team and the Product Owner, look down on the Scrum Master and feel the Scrum Master is not valuable and not reliable. I have heard people say the Scrum Master is just the meeting coordinator, coffee clerk, team personal secretary, cheerleader, tools administrator, and so much more.
I have made this vlog that explains the Scrum Master accountability to help organisations understand & respect the work that the Scrum Master does and how it contributes to the company and also to help the Scrum Master continuously level up the game and deliver value to the company he/she is working for.
I hope this vlog is helpful for you. Thank you for all of your support throughout 2019. Have a wonderful holiday and stay awesome everyone.
